Unveiling the Principles and Pros/Cons of Chemical Tempering

Chemical tempering, also known as ion exchange strengthening, is a method of tempering glass by altering its surface composition through chemical means. It increases the mechanical strength and thermal stability of glass by introducing compressive stress on the surface. This technique is achieved through the process of ion exchange. Chemical tempering can be classified into two categories based on the temperature of ion exchange: low-temperature ion exchange (below the glass transition temperature) and high-temperature ion exchange (above the glass transition temperature).

The principle behind chemical tempering lies in the mechanism of ion diffusion. By immersing glass in a high-temperature molten salt bath, alkali metal ions within the glass diffuse and exchange with alkali metal ions in the molten salt, resulting in a phenomenon called "crowding." This crowding effect generates compressive stress on the glass surface, thereby enhancing its strength.

According to the network structure theory of glass, glassy materials consist of an amorphous three-dimensional network composed of oxygen polyhedra, with aluminum (Al) or phosphorus (P) occupying the central positions. These ions, along with alkali metal ions (e.g., sodium and potassium), form the glass network. In chemical tempering, alkali metal ions are prone to diffuse and segregate from the glass, causing a change in the surface composition and the formation of a surface layer with compressive stress. However, the compressive stress layer generated by ion exchange is relatively thin and sensitive to surface defects. Even minor scratches can significantly reduce the strength of the glass.

Advantages and Disadvantages:

Chemically tempered glass exhibits strength comparable to physically tempered glass, along with excellent thermal stability. It can be processed at lower temperatures, maintains its shape during production, and is not restricted by thickness or geometric shape. The equipment required for chemical tempering is simple, and the production process is relatively straightforward. However, when compared to physically tempered glass, chemical tempering has some drawbacks. The production cycle is longer (exchange time can extend to several tens of hours), resulting in lower efficiency and higher production costs (due to the inability to recycle the molten salt and the requirement for high purity). Chemically tempered glass fragments similarly to ordinary glass, which reduces its safety performance. Additionally, its properties are less stable in terms of chemical stability, and its physical properties such as mechanical strength and impact resistance can deteriorate rapidly over time.

Applications:

Chemically tempered glass finds wide-ranging applications in various thicknesses of flat glass, thin-walled glass, and shaped glass products, as well as in fire-resistant glass.

In summary, chemical tempering is a glass strengthening technique that modifies the surface composition of glass through ion exchange, creating a compressive stress layer. It offers advantages such as improved strength, thermal stability, and versatility in shape and thickness. However, it also has limitations in terms of production time, cost, safety, and stability.
